Towards Sustainable Development, Environment and Livelihoods in the Yala Swamp (SEDELS-Yala)
RECONCILE is developing a programme of work around the Yala swamp; the biggest wetland in the Western region of the Kenya. The programme aims at making participatory natural resource management work for the poor by securing their access and user rights to resource in the era of privatization of commons. When privatization of common resource such as wetlands are undertaken without involving the people, whose livelihood depends on these resources entirely, the security of their livelihoods is undermined and their vulnerability is enhanced. In the process, the sustainable management of the environment is also undermined.
RECONCILE intends to build the capacity of communities and local institutions for policy engagement and participatory decision making with regard to the management of the environment and natural resources.
