    Projects and Programmes

The work of RECONCILE is presently organized around the following four programme areas:

  1. Haki Mazingira:

This is the Environmental Justice Programme of RECONCILE which works to promote access to environmental justice through research, environmental legal education and awareness creation, capacity building, training and public interest environmental litigation.  RECONCILE has established the Western Kenya Environmental Law Centre (WK-ELC) to empower citizens to promote environmental enforcement and compliance in the three provinces of western Kenya, namely: Rift Valley, Nyanza and Western.
See the following projects ongoing under this programme:
  2. Commons, Policy, Law and Livelihoods (COMPLY) Programme:

undertakes research, advocacy and capacity building on policies and laws that govern common property resources, with a view to securing access, control and user rights for communities that depend on these resources for their livelihoods.  The Programme works with these communities to identify and take advantage of opportunities while addressing the challenges to CPRs arising from privatization, formalization and other development imperatives associated with globalization.
See the documents below for more details

  3. Land Rights Programme:

works with communities and groups to generate and share knowledge and develop capacities for effective engagement with policies, laws, institutions and processes that have a bearing on access to land and security of tenure, particular for rural land users.  The Programme is actively involved in ongoing land and natural resource sector reform with a view to ensuring that they secure the rights of resource dependent communities and ensure sustainable resource management.
See the land policy below for more:

  4.  Special Programmes:

encompass one-off projects generated through partnerships.  These projects provide opportunities for RECONCILE to work with other like-minded local and foreign organizations in pursuit of common interests.  Often such special projects contribute directly to the other substantive programme areas of work.  Within the framework of Special Programmes, RECONCILE is presently undertaking case studies on customary land law in Kenya, Southern Sudan and South Africa in partnership with FAO, with a view to developing a long-term programme of work on ascertainment of customary land law.  It is also part of a consortium of local and international NGOs implementing the Regional Pastoralist Livelihoods Advocacy Project (REGLAP).  Through Special Programmes RECONCILE also undertakes consultancies and hosts interns from both local and foreign universities.
