Collaborative Programme for Lake Naivasha Environment (C-PLANE)

With funding support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and in collaboration with local CBOs in Naivasha, the programme is facilitating consultations among stakeholders around the lake on how they can collaborate to secure access to the lake and its resources and to manage the conflicts arising from competing needs for these resources. The project is a follow-up to the field visits to the lake area, organized by the Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development Initiative (SARD) of FAO as part of the Regional Workshop on improving tenure security for the rural poor in Sub Saharan Africa, which was held in Nakuru in October 2006 and organized by RECONCILE and FAO.

The project builds on consultations undertaken in November and December 2006 by RECONCILE with stakeholders from the lake area to identify key issues on access to and management of natural resources and to consider an approach that will help address the available conflicts and promote sustainable resource management. It shall feed into and inform the recommendations of FAO and RECONCILE to the Commission on Legal Empowerment of the Poor (CLEP), while also generating and documenting good practice for SARD initiative database and to inform advocacy by RECONCILE on common property resource management in Kenya and East Africa.
